What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel improves the skin's appearance. This treatment involves an application of a chemical or other natural solution to exfoliate the skin which makes it "peel off". After the peel, the new skin will look and feel smoother, healthier and younger. It will also reduce wrinkles. Chemical peels are primarily applied to the face but it can be done on the face, neck or hands. Chemical peel are highly effective for younger and more radiant skin.

There are a number of conditions a chemical peel may treat:

  • Acne scars
  • Freckles
  • Hyper pigmentation
  • Skin aging
  • Scars
  • Sun damaged skin
  • Sagging skin
  • Wrinkles

Depending on the severity of the skin condition, there are three basic types of chemical peels:

  • Light peel: Alpha-hydroxy acid or another mild acids which gently exfoliates the outer layer of skin
  • Medium peel: Glycolic or trichloroacetic acids which removes damaged skin cells from the outer and middle layers of skin
  • Deep peel: Tricholoracetic acid or phenol which removes damaged skin cells by deeply penetrating the middle layer of skin

It is very important to consult a professional for a skin assessment before deciding which treatment is required. The professionals at our office will thoroughly asses your skin condition and explain the process essential in making your skin look healthier and younger. Chemical peels may work best in combination with other cosmetology treatment which will be assessed on a client-based evaluation.

Pumpkin Peel

Pumpkin peels are much gentler than and as effective as glycolic peels. It uses natural pumpkin enzymes to exfoliate and enrich your skin with vitamins and nutrients. Immediately after application, your skin will appear clear and smooth. People with mild acne and sensitive skin will highly benefit from this procedure as it is far less invasive than a glycolic peel. Pumpkin is rich in beta carotene and vitamin A which stimulates circulations and promotes natural healing of the skin. This procedure is mild and works on a superficial level to help retexture skin and will not reduce hyper pigmentation.

Papaya Peel

The papaya fruit comes from the Carica papaya plant of the Caricaceae family. It is a native fruit to the tropics of the Americas. Papaya is also a great source of Vitamin A, B, C and Papain. It has presence of proteolytic enzymes which helps to remove dead skin cells and break down inactive proteins. The "Low Sodium Quality" of papaya helps in keeping the skin hydrated because it retains very little water. Papaya is used to treat dark spots and even out skin tone to achieve smoother and glowing skin. It can also be used to treat mild dry skin conditions. Papaya fruit is also rich in antioxidants which is useful for smoothing out wrinkles for a younger appearance.

Vi Peel

The Vi Peel is a pharmaceutical-grade chemical peel, that is produced by Vitality Institute Medical Products, a manufacturer of medical-grade skin care treatments that are meant to address the signs of aging and common skin damage problems. The company believes that the Vi Peel can help reduce the effects of sun damage and reduce signs of melasma. The main thrust of the Vi Peel is an attempt at reducing the pain and discomfort commonly associated with chemical peels, although results vary between patients.

Chemical peels generally yield better results for fair-skinned and light-haired patients. Some darker skin patients may also have good results depending on the type of problem being treated. However, darker skin patients may experience uneven skin tone or light spots after the procedure.
Skin sags, bulges, and severe wrinkles are not treated well with chemical peels. There are other cosmetic surgical procedures to treat those types of problems such as, laser resurfacing, facelift, brow lift, eyelid lift and etc. Consult a licensed dermatologist to determine the best type of treatment for you.
The procedure is also not recommended for patients with infections, active skin disease, cut or broken skin, sunburns or active Herpes simplex 1 sores.
In addition to patients who:
  • Are pregnant or nursing
  • Have taken Accutane in the last six (6) months
  • Have psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis or rosacea
  • Have used Retin-A, Renova, prescription skin care products, products that contain ascorbic acid, bleaching or skin-lightening agents or other acid-based products in the last 48 hours

Please inform our doctors if you fall into one or more of the above categories before receiving a chemical peel procedure.

Are chemical peels painful?

Chemical peels slightly sting but do not cause a great deal of discomfort. Our office uses natural mild products that makes the procedure an enjoyable experience. Gentle chemical peels use alpha-hydroxy, glycolic, lactic or fruit acids which does not hurt the patient. Some stinging, redness, irritation and crusting may occur initially while the skin begins to adjust to the procedure and will be reduced with further treatments.

Are there any side effects of a chemical peel?

  • Temporary or permanent change in skin color
  • Scarring
  • Reactivation of cold sores
  • Hyper or hypopigmentation
  • Redness
  • Itching
As mentioned earlier, these side effects are significantly reduced from the use of natural mild chemicals during our procedures.

You can get a chemical peel in a doctor's office or in a surgery center. It's an outpatient procedure, meaning there's no overnight stay.
The professional who does your peel will first clean your skin thoroughly. Then he or she will apply one or more chemical solutions -- such as glycolic acid, trichloroacetic acid, salicylic acid, lactic acid, or carbolic acid (phenol) -- to small areas of your skin. That creates a controlled wound, letting new skin take its place.

Depending upon the type of chemical peel, a reaction similar to sunburn occurs following the procedure. Peeling usually involves redness followed by scaling that ends within three to seven days. Mild peels may be repeated at one to four-week intervals until you get the look you're after.
Medium-depth and deep peeling may result in swelling as well as blisters that may break, crust, turn brown, and peel off over a period of seven to 14 days. Medium-depth peels may be repeated in six to 12 months, if necessary.
After treatment, you may need bandages for several days on part or all of the skin that was treated.
You'll need to avoid the sun for several months after a chemical peel since your new skin will be fragile.
